Does Baby Need to Burp after Every Feed?

“I am having trouble getting my baby to burp after feeds. Is it important for her burp after every feed?”

Our Answer: 

It’s not a problem if your baby doesn’t burp every time. Breastfed babies don’t necessarily get a lot of air during feeding. It is worth trying for a few minutes but if you get a burp, consider it a bonus.

A burp may be accompanied by a little milk. Small spit-ups are normal – it simply means more laundry!

If your baby has a forceful spit-up that “shoots across the room”, we suggest you check with your healthcare provider, particularly if it happens more than once a day.
